About us

HDF Energy is a leading global player in the hydrogen industry, dedicated to developing large-scale hydrogen infrastructure and advanced multi-megawatt fuel cell technology.

These fuel cells generate electricity from hydrogen, driving the decarbonization efforts across the power generation, heavy maritime and rail mobility sectors. Set to commence mass production in 2025 at HDF Energy’s facility near Bordeaux, these fuel cells serve as the cornerstone of the power plants and heavy mobility solutions developed by HDF Energy.

HDF Energy's Renewstable® power plants deliver non-intermittent renewable, stable and baseload power by seamlessly integrating intermittent renewable energy sources with substantial on-site energy storage in the form of green hydrogen. Moreover, HDF Energy is also developing extensive infrastructure for the mass production of carbon-free hydrogen.

Backed by a team of over 100 hydrogen experts boasting more than a decade of operational experience across the value chain, HDF Energy is currently developing a portfolio of projects valued at over €5 billion.

Headquartered in France, HDF Energy has regional offices in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia, Africa, and Oceania with 30+ nationalities among its staff. Since 2021, the Group has been listed on the Euronext Paris stock market, member of the Euronext Tech Leaders segment.

Our story

HDF Energy was founded in December 2012 by Damien Havard with the vision that hydrogen could be a perfect means to massively store and produce clean power whilst offsetting the intermittency of renewable energy.

Check out the milestones of the last 10 years:

2012

Creation of the company.

2013
/ 14

Development of a hydrogen ecosystem for mobility purposes, natural gas networks and power production from fuel cells.

Creation of the “H2Bus France” cluster to promote hydrogen buses and initiate the deployment of 300 buses on the continent, in coordination with other European clusters.

2015
/ 16

Launch of the Cleargen project in Martinique: the world’s first installation of a 1 MW fuel cell for an industrial application to produce electricity from excess hydrogen from the SARA refinery.

2017
/ 18

Launch of the CEOG project in French Guiana: the world’s first high-power hydrogen power plant, which is now being replicated in more than 30 countries. Meridiam joined the project as the main investor.

2019
/ 20

Opening of HDF’s offices in Indonesia and in Australia. Start of our partnership with Ballard to develop and manufacture high-power fuel cells for hydrogen power plants.

2021

Initial Public Offering: +150 M€. In this same year, HDF opens offices in South Africa, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

2022

Renewstable® Barbados project : Rubis acquires 51% of the project’s shares.

2023
/ 24

Construction and launch of HDF’s gigafactory in Bordeaux (France) to mass produce multi-MW fuel cells.
