RENEWSTABLE® POWER PLANTS

Multi-MW power plants supplying firm power 24/7

  • Firm power production and supply
  • Renewable source combined with long-term hydrogen energy storage
  • On demand and large-scale power production

Renewstable® power plants were born from HDF Energy’s expertise in the field of hydrogen energy storage.

HDF Energy is today launching in France its own Multi-Megawatt fuel cell manufacturing facility (based on PEM technology).

Hypower® Power Plants

HyPower (Hydrogen To Power) are multi-MW fuel cell power plants producing electricity from low carbon and/or renewable hydrogen supplied by existing hydrogen infrastructures.

HyPower offers a viable and relevant alternative to fossil fuel power generation, achieving energy transition by producing green electricity on demand, complementing intermittent renewable energy sources. The clients are electrical utilities, private businesses willing to decarbonize their electrical supply and harbours for port infrastructure and shore power.

Hypower is being deployed in a favorable European environment. The Gas TSOs are developing the European Hydrogen Backbone that will connect hydrogen supply projects with existing and new hydrogen demand.

The quick expansion of hydrogen pipelines and users gives HDF the opportunity to plug-in HyPower Plants across the network to reach new territories. HDF is working jointly with all the key Hydrogen Backbone actors to strategically integrate Hypower Plants where the need is located.

We plan to install about 200 MW of Hypower Plants by 2025 in Europe and reach over 1GW after 2030.

Multi-MW Fuel Cells

PEM Technology

A proton exchange membrane fuel cell transforms the chemical energy liberated during the electrochemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen into electricity and water:

  • 2 H2 (hydrogen) + O2 (oxygen) → 2 H2O (water + electricity)

This reaction is possible thanks to the Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) inserted between two metallic conduction plates (a cathode and an anode) which only lets the hydrogen ion (H+ of protons) pass through.

This clean reaction takes place in each of the cells that are combined in large number to constitute modules. The assembly of modules in parallel and series gives the possibility to obtain the desired fuel cell stacks with the right voltage and current output.

The fuel cell stacks are finally integrated with their own hydrogen and air supply, cooling system and SCADA controller to regulate the generation of electricity.

Advantages of the technology:

  • Fuel cell system direct emissions are just water and heat.
  • Fuel cells have no moving parts. They are thus much more reliable than traditional engines.
  • PEM fuel cells operate at a low temperature, which allows for faster start-up and rapid response to changes in the demand for power (load following), are ideally suited to both motive and stationary applications.
  • Hydrogen can be produced in an environmentally friendly manner (from solar or wind energy), while oil extraction and refining is very damaging.

Market

Power Plants Renewstable® and HyPower®

These projects use high power fuel cells to produce decarbonized electricity on demand with performances comparable to thermal power plants.

HEAVY MOBILITY

The heavy mobility applications such as the marine propulsion or the rail traction need large scale power generation and high level of reliability. These two industries are strongly supporting the reduction of GHG and they are searching for new and nonpolluting solution.

The heavy mobility applications such as marine propulsion and rail traction require large-scale power generation with a high level of reliability. These two industries are facing tougher regulations over reduction of GHG and are therefore seeking new innovative and non-polluting propulsion solutions.

AUXILIARY POWER UNIT

Fuel Cell as a power generator constitutes an alternative solution to diesel gensets. It offers a soundless and non-polluting solution with the same level of availability and flexibility
